Why do glass balustrades get dirty so quickly?

Outdoor balustrades catch rain spots, dust and pollen, and stair and balcony glass picks up fingerprints at hand height every day.

Brisbane’s summer storms leave water marks that dry in the sun, and dust from the street and garden settles on top. Inside, kids and pets leave smudges along the lower panels.

What’s the best way to clean glass balustrades?

Dust them first, wash with warm water and a little dishwashing liquid, then dry with a squeegee or microfibre cloth from top to bottom.

Work one panel at a time so the solution doesn’t dry on the glass. Finish the edges and around the fittings with a dry cloth, because that’s where streaks and dust collect.

How do I get rid of water spots on balcony glass?

Light spots usually lift with a 50/50 white vinegar and water mix, left on for a minute and then wiped off.

Spots that have been baked on for months are harder to shift, and scrubbing harder can scratch the glass. Keep vinegar off stone and stainless steel, and rinse the glass afterwards.

What should I avoid when cleaning balustrade glass?

Avoid abrasive pads, steel wool and blades, which can scratch the glass, and harsh chemicals that can mark stainless steel fittings.

Frosted, tinted or film-covered glass needs extra care: stick to a soft cloth and mild solution, and never use a blade on it. We clean frosted and tinted balustrades too, so mention it when you ask for a quote.

How often should glass balustrades be cleaned?

As a guide, every 3 to 6 months, ideally at the same time as your windows.

Stair glass and balconies that get a lot of use may need a quick wipe of fingerprints in between. Balconies near busy roads, or exposed to storms, tend to need it more often.

Is it safe to clean the outside of balcony glass myself?

Only if you can reach it from the ground or from inside the balcony without leaning over the edge.

The outer face of an upstairs balcony is one of the most common places people overreach. If you can’t reach it safely, leave it to a professional. We clean outside glass up to three storeys from the ground with water-fed poles.

How do professionals clean glass balustrades?

We clean both sides of each panel, then detail the edges and fittings so the glass looks clear from every angle.

We use soft cloths and glass-safe products, protect floors and decking while we work, and use water-fed poles for higher outside glass. See glass balustrade cleaning.

How much does balustrade cleaning cost in Brisbane?

Balustrade cleaning is done together with a window clean and quoted to your glass.

The price depends on the number of panels, how high they are and how easy they are to reach. Send a few photos and you’ll get a clear, itemised quote within 24 hours. See the full Brisbane window cleaning price guide.
