- Wipe the channel with warm water and a little dishwashing liquid
- Clear the drainage holes with a pipe cleaner or cotton bud
- Dry the track so water doesn’t sit in the corners
Avoid
- Pouring water into a track full of loose dirt, which turns it into mud
- Bleach and harsh chemicals on aluminium, rubber seals and timber
- Screwdrivers and metal scrapers that can scratch the track
- Forcing a window or door that’s jammed with grit
Questions
Explore the guide.
Why do window tracks get so dirty?
Tracks sit at the bottom of the window, so grit, leaves, insects and rain all end up in the same channel.
Brisbane’s storms wash dirt into the tracks, and the humidity keeps them damp. Sliding doors are the worst, because they also collect whatever is walked in from the deck or garden.
What’s the easiest way to clean window tracks?
Vacuum the loose dirt first, brush out what’s packed in, then wipe the track with a damp cloth and dry it.
Doing it in that order is the key. If you add water while the track is still full of grit, you’ll be wiping mud around. A crevice tool and an old toothbrush do most of the work.
How do I get mould out of window tracks?
Light mould usually comes off with a mix of white vinegar and water, left on for a few minutes and then wiped and dried.
Mould in tracks is a sign that moisture is sitting there, so clear the drainage holes and dry the track well afterwards. Wear gloves, and keep the room aired while you work.
How do I clean sliding door tracks?
The same way as window tracks: vacuum, brush, wipe and dry, with extra attention to the corners and drainage holes.
Sliding door tracks carry a lot of weight and foot traffic, so grit there wears the rollers faster. If the door still drags after a clean, the rollers may need adjusting, which is a job for a glazier or handyman. We clean sliding door tracks too.
How often should window tracks be cleaned?
As a guide, every 6 to 12 months, and more often if you’re near a garden, a busy road or a building site.
An easy routine is to do the tracks when you get your windows cleaned. That way, dirt from the tracks doesn’t end up back on clean glass.
Do window cleaners clean the tracks?
Not usually as part of a standard window clean, which covers the glass and sills. With us, tracks are an extra you can add to your window clean.
We vacuum out loose grit, leaves and insects, then wipe the tracks down so windows and sliding doors glide again. See window track cleaning.
Should I clean window tracks before a bond inspection?
Yes. In Queensland, the RTA’s exit cleaning checklist includes windows and window tracks.
Property managers often check tracks and sliding doors, because they’re easy to miss. If you’re short on time before an inspection, call us and we’ll try to fit you in.
How much does window track cleaning cost in Brisbane?
Window track cleaning is quoted to suit your home and added to your window clean.
The price depends on the size of your home and how many windows and sliding doors you have. See the full Brisbane window cleaning price guide.
Got flyscreens too? They can go in the same visit: see flyscreen cleaning.
